Pet Shop

Overview of the Dramatic Play Pet Shop

Children work on display - mixed media using coloured paper and chalk on black paper
framed with crushed brown paper.

 Animal soft toys on display.

Top self - animal puppets.
left side - blue and green fish tank made by children using boxes and fruit tray.
right side - dressing up bear clothes

Pizza Making

A pictorial guide on how to make a pizza at the dramatic corner.

A step by step guide in making a pizza for a customer.
The pizza slices were sewn together using felt pineapple, salami and cheese
were added to the pizza. Through the process, children learn to sequence the steps,
count, divide the ingredients equally on the pizza slices and they learn to do grouping.

First, place the pizza slices onto a tray...

Place one pineapple slice on each piece...

Next 2 pieces of salami...

And 3 pieces of cheese...

Bake it in the oven and ... it's ready to eat!

Teaching Aids

Counting Birthday Candles

Magnetic strips were placed between the laminated cake sheet and mounting board.
Smaller strips of magnets were also attached to the candles. This activity is used for the theme 'Myself' or 'I have a Birthday'. Preschoolers are encouraged to do count and do simple one-to one correspondence.
For Kindergarten level, I would cut out number words and have them match
them to the  numerals.

Supermarket on Mars

This is an extension to Rigby Rocket's 'Supermarket on Mars'.
I made a shopping cart and had children pick out a picture card and have them say
"In goes.....into the shopping cart" This activity helps children to use the proper terms such as 'a bar of chocolate'; 'a box of cereals'; 'a loaf of bread' and so forth.

Food Display
Fishball Mee Pok.
GNoodles made with cotton yarn. Green and red electrical tape are used for the garnishing -spring onions and chilli. Fishballs are made using crushed toilet paper or kitchen towel with water and PVA glue. You need to squeeze them hard to form the shape.

Meatball Spaghetti
Meatballs are painted brown and the spaghetti is painted with yellow Ochre. As for the tomato sauce, I cut out a circle from a kitchen towel and dab in some dark red paint.

Supermarket

The challenge in setting up a supermarket is getting enough items to fill it up. Commercially made or plastic toy food items were too costly to purchase so I decided to add on my own creations, hopefully they resemble enough to the real thing. Most of the items like the broccoli, watermelon, cabbage and eggplant, chicken and fish were all made using paper mache.

Full view of the whole supermarket. I had other teachers 'shopping'
in my supermarket as they were also teaching about food
found in the market or supermarket.

I made this rack using the wire mesh and cable tie.
The yellow boxes including the wire mesh were all from Diaso - $2 shop.
|I liked the idea of using chalk to write on black paper as it gives the aesthetic look.

For the shelf products, I got children to design soup cans
as seen on the 2nd shelf on the right.
The rest were all used containers and boxes.

The giant strawberries and apples on the left were done by the Nursery children.

A mixture of teacher-made items and commercial ones.
Can you tell the ones that I've made?

On the right side is the cold storage where you can find ice cream,
chicken meat and cold drinks.

Japanese Restaurant

The theme was on 'Restaurant' so I decided to do a Japanese Restaurant this time.
The objective was to create activities within the dramatic corner with mathematical concepts.
I created a menu with various prices on it so that children learn the value of money. I also had recipe cards for children to follow in order to make the dishes. I used angel clay to make the ingredients as it was cheap and easy to use. However the disadvantage was that it disintegrates when it touches water. I had to use lacquer or varnish to protect them.

The Sakura Special set

Ebi Ramen

Sushi anyone?
For the rice, I cut out a rectangular shape from a piece of hard foam.
I used masking tape to cover it and painted it white.
Then I used tiny foam balls cut into 4 and painstakingly pasted them onto the foam base.

Another noodle dish with different ingredients. The egg actually looked real until I varnished it.
These ingredients were made using soft clay and varnish. It was tricky to sculpt the prawns when when they kept breaking apart.

Dramatic Play Corners

Bakery

The bakery set-up is well organised with labels. I collected some big cake boxes to put up as display on the shelf. The stone oven is made from a big box and painted with gray paint. Pretend bread  and baskets were bought from Diaso $2.00 shop. Children could create their own cupcakes by decorating the harden clay shaped like a cupcake with plastercine.
